About

The fellowship in orthopedic surgery of the spine provides training in the care of spinal diseases, which can be divided into five categories:

  • Core knowledge
  • Clinical evaluation
  • Operative management
  • Postoperative care
  • Non-operative management

Corewell Health training has provided a steppingstone to both excellent practice opportunities and to positions at the nation's most prestigious medical centers.

Fellowship goals

  • Provide the educational environment needed to train a spine fellow in the evaluation, diagnosis, non-operative and operative treatment of spinal disorders in children and adults
  • Educate the fellows to understand the ramifications of the decision-making process including understanding of complications of treatment and rehabilitation required to obtain an optimal result
  • Provide an outpatient environment to each the fellow how to evaluate, manage, and follow patients in an outpatient setting
  • Help the fellows to develop teaching skills in educating residents and medical students
  • Help the fellows to amplify research skills in the clinical and laboratory settings. This helps the fellow to develop a more analytical approach to problem solving and prepares him/her to look critically at the literature
  • Familiarize the fellows with outcome tools and the necessary programs to perform outcomes research
