Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Royal Oak

Beaumont’s ACGME-accredited FPMRS urology-based fellowship program accepts one urology resident graduate per year who will spend two years in intensive clinical and research training in the evaluation and management of women with pelvic floor disorders. The program is led by Priya Padmanabhan, MD, and a multidisciplinary academic faculty that includes six fellowship-trained urologists, a urogynecologist, a colon and rectal surgeon, and gastrointestinal specialists.

The FPMRS program is broadly based on Corewell Health’s high surgical volume in prolapse repair (abdominal/robotic, vaginal with native tissue and mesh), male incontinence (artificial urinary sphincter and sling), female incontinence (fascial and mesh sling, urethral bulking agents, complex fistula repair, neuromodulation (sacral, pudendal and percutaneous tibial nerve), and leading-edge technologies for stress urinary incontinence.

The FPMRS fellows also benefit from clinical experience in the Women’s Urology Center, one of the few well developed multidisciplinary outpatient clinics designed specifically for women with pelvic floor disorders. Fellows work with nurse practitioners, physical therapy, clinical psychologists, and integrative medicine specialists who collaborate to evaluate and manage highly complex patients.

Mission

Our mission aligns with the mission of Corewell Health and the Department of Urology, which is to train our female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery fellows to provide compassionate, extraordinary care to a diverse population. The Corewell Health FPMRS fellowship program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares physicians to meet the demands of a FPMRS practice in urban and suburban settings and academic and tertiary care environments. Fellows learn to provide patient-and-family-centered care, thereby improving the quality of care and well-being of patients throughout the community.

The mission statement is a written statement of a program's core purpose. This statement should clarify the focus of the educational program (e.g. academic/research focus, community care focus, etc.), what community the program will serve and how that will be accomplished, and how the program's mission aligns with the larger mission of the sponsoring Institution.

Aims

  • To prepare fellows for the practice of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery by teaching the knowledge, skills, compassion, and humanistic qualities that make up this practice
  • To competently and responsibly diagnose and treat, and educate patients about the full range of pelvic floor disorders
  • To provide fellows progressive responsibility to enable effective management of clinical problems in a contemporary FPMRS practice
  • To prepare graduates who are competent for autonomous practice of FPMRS in the context of patient-and-family-centered care
  • To set the foundation for lifelong learning of new skills and how to assess and interpret the medical literature, whether for an individual patient or a population, and integrate important information into their practice
  • To develop physicians who monitor their own physical and mental well-being
