PGY2, Infectious Diseases

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital offers an ASHP - accredited twelve-month Infectious Diseases PGY2 Residency program for one residency candidate. Our program strives to meet the needs of the resident based on previous PGY1 residency experience, interests and individual goals.

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital provides the resident with training in diverse areas of infectious diseases. The resident will rotate through a number of core and elective rotations that serve to develop leadership skills and clinical expertise in Infectious Diseases pharmacotherapy. Participation in interdisciplinary committees, interactions with other healthcare providers, along with formal and informal presentations, will help strengthen the resident’s communication skills. The resident will gain teaching experience through student and resident preceptorship and didactic instruction.

The resident must meet the following requirements for employment at Beaumont Hospital as the PGY2 Infectious Diseases pharmacy resident:

• Licensed pharmacist or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan (including controlled substance license)
• Successful completion of a PGY1 ASHP accredited residency

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program can be structurally divided into 3 components; individual learning experiences (each one month in duration, unless otherwise specified), longitudinal requirements, and weekend staffing. Our program strives to maximize individual growth and development during the year through the use of our advisor program.

The PGY2 ID resident will complete 10 required learning experiences and 2 elective learning experiences. Any required or elective learning experience may be repeated a second time as an elective (with the exception of Microbiology/Infection Prevention and Epidemiology, and off-site learning experiences). The sequence of learning experiences is dependent upon preceptor availability and resident requests for particular learning experiences prior to Midyear Clinical Meeting. Additionally, the Infectious Diseases consult service and the Microbiology/Infection Prevention and Epidemiology learning experiences are scheduled prior to December. The PGY2-ID resident will utilize the month of December for research purposes.

• Critical care (medical or surgical)
• Solid organ transplant

• HIV Clinic
• Antimicrobial Stewardship Metrics and Data Analysis
• Antimicrobial Stewardship & Formulary Management

Elective Learning Experiences

• Emergency medicine
• Pediatric infectious diseases
• Hematology oncology
• Antimicrobial Stewardship - Dearborn Hospital

Longitudinal Requirements

• Participate in local and corporate antimicrobial subcommittees and hospital infectious disease workgroups/committees 
• Complete a formulary review and an anti-infective guideline and/or protocol
• Assist with creation of an antibiogram
• Complete 1 pharmacy noon conference presentations and 1 pharmacy grand rounds presentation
• Deliver a presentation at the ID interesting case conference to the ID physicians and two (2) ID fellow didactic lectures
• Provide 1 continuing education lecture to pharmacy staff
• Complete 4 journal club presentations
• Successfully complete a medication use evaluation (MUE) or mini-project
• Meet weekend staffing requirements (every third weekend and one major and one minor holiday)
• Complete pharmacy resident on-call program requirements
• Support the precepting of Doctor of Pharmacy Students and PGY1 Pharmacy Residents
• Approval by the Research Committee of final manuscript for residency project
• Active participation and support of residency recruitment activities
• Submission of an acceptable manuscript to a peer reviewed journal
• Achievement of 90% of the objectives for the required goals and have no educational objectives remaining in which the last assessment was recorded as needs improvement

Professional Meeting Attendance Requirements

• Attend ASHP Midyear conference and/or ID Week
• Present at a regional resident research conference (e.g., Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference, Ohio Pharmacy Resident Conference)
