Nurses are the backbone of the health care system, providing essential services and improving the quality of life for millions of people. Nurses are also leaders, innovators, educators, and advocates who shape the future of health care and society. While the demand for nurses continues to grow, the supply is diminishing at an alarming pace. Current projections anticipate a shortage of almost half a million nurses in the U.S. by 2025.

Our response to this challenge is the Corewell Health Center for Nursing Career Development, an innovative program designed to increase and simplify the trajectory of prospective nurses throughout dynamic and rewarding careers, at all Corewell Health hospitals in West Michigan. Through partnership with local high schools and intermediate school districts as well as focused investment for nursing-related externship and academic grants, the center will be designed to ensure a successful, accelerated pathway into clinical practice. The Center will also promote career longevity and stability through providing a variety of enhanced educational and professional development opportunities both for established Corewell Health nurses and for team members who aspire to become nurses.

Ensuring that we have talented and dedicated physicians to sustain world-class health care for our community is imperative. As the demand for new physicians becomes more competitive, we need to create opportunities to attract this talent to West Michigan. Each year, many incoming medical residents and fellows will seek housing close to the medical campus as they will encounter various on-call, overnight and 24-hour shifts. With the help of philanthropic funding, Corewell Health is responding to this demand with plans to provide below market rate housing for medical residents to create a welcoming, safe, and affordable housing option.

Opening in 2027, our new medical resident housing will include on-site parking, security, rooftop patio, retail space, and 145 units of various size and configuration for residents and their families. The proximity of this new facility to the medical campus, just a couple blocks away, and other nearby establishments — like restaurants, parks and theaters — will enhance the experience of our residents and create an environment of collaboration and camaraderie, increasing the likelihood of their continued employment at Corewell Health once they have graduated.

Endowed positions and programs are an important enhancement for the recruitment and retention of world-class physicians. These esteemed roles — common in academic medical centers but comparatively rare in community hospital systems like Corewell Health — support pioneering programs and advanced therapies, bolstering our objective to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. Endowments ensure support for clinicians to engage in the research necessary to advance patient care, demonstrate our commitment to innovation through capital investment in equipment and facilities, and facilitate meaningful discoveries to improve outcomes for all.

Annual endowment disbursements support programs and position enhancements that are — due to inadequate insurance reimbursement — often enhanced or made possible through philanthropy. With flexible payment terms up to five years, you can designate your endowment area — whether position or program — and trust that investment earnings will grow over time to continually fund your philanthropic priorities.
