patients received financial assistance for transportation to their health care appointments
Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital brings the resources of Corewell Health to your community — always with a caring, compassionate approach. Through the contributions of our supporters, we can ensure that our patients receive the highest quality care without having to travel far, making a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.
Philanthropy has made it possible to have telehealth clinics at both Zeeland East and Zeeland West high schools, bringing access to behavioral health services close to home. Your support makes these sessions free of charge for students who do not have insurance.
This year, the Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital Foundation board invested a portion of undesignated funds to well-being efforts, creating a new outdoor space for team members, visitors, and patients alike. This area is located just outside of the cafeteria and is a beautiful way to relax and rejuvenate during the day.
Comfort Rounds utilizes internal staff who are not on the care team to visit patients. This non-clinical staff person, hospital supervisor, or leader serves as a connection point during the patient’s holding time. With a focus on the human connection, the rounder provides conversation, information (destination maps, phone numbers), items for use (charging cord, earphones, blanket, magnifying glass, toiletries, etc.) and environmental comforts (recliner for family), enhancing the care experience.
Last summer, Tara Renbarger, RN; Katie Garmyn, RN; Sally Timmer, RN; Stefanie Machiela, RN; and Marcha Hoekstra, RN attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Nurses Leading Change for Well-Being Conference. Through dynamic presentations and interactive breakout sessions, they explored what well-being truly means, including strategies to promote well-being, and how it directly impacts patient outcomes. Those who attended brought ideas back to the hospital and used them to foster a culture of well-being that both supports our nurses and elevates the care they provide to our community.
This year’s pickleball tournament raised $34,000 for Youth Behavioral Health Clinics currently in Zeeland East and West High Schools.
As part of the School Blue Envelope program in Ottawa and Allegan County, training is provided to school staff so that they can spot students who are struggling with suicidal ideation.
Here is some feedback received about the trainings:
“Thank you! As a person who experienced childhood suicidal thoughts (age 8-10), I appreciate this training and the destigmatizing of suicidal thoughts. I always felt so much shame for the pain I carried. My loved ones told me how selfish it was to even think about suicide. How much they needed and loved me. But those comments didn't take my pain away. It just made it shameful. Thank you for helping school staff learn compassion and empathetic responses.”
“This is perhaps the most important training we receive every year. Please don't ever stop providing it.”
“As tough of a subject as this is to address, it is great to go over each year and refresh. Thank you.”
