This endowment was created at Corewell Health Gerber Hospital in 2024 to support cancer wellness programs. These services include salon and wig services, massages, music therapy, art therapy and more. This new endowment will allow all patients to receive these services at no cost to them.
Supporting Gerber Hospital leaders in furthering their education, this scholarship allowed the nursing leadership team to attend the Global Summit Leadership Conference.
“Our nursing leadership team would like to give a wholehearted THANK YOU for the opportunity to attend the Global Summit Leadership Conference (GSLC)! This two-day event was filled with motivation, inspiration, wellness and team building. As leaders and as nurses, we don’t often get the time to step away from our desk and focus on our professional development, and the GSLC gave us great ideas to take back to our teams who work incredibly hard to take care of their patients and families every single day.”

The 2nd Annual Gerber Hospital Flannel Fest raised funds the new Cancer Care Center Wellness Endowment, which will provide services at the Gerber Hospital Cancer Care Center including salon and wig services, massages, music therapy, art therapy and more at no cost to patients and families. At this year’s event, Marianne Boerigter was honored with the Gerber Hospital Legacy Award, which is given to a family or individual who leads in the community by supporting Gerber Hospital philanthropic initiatives.
Kay Cole was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer in February 2024. She felt scared, alone, and found herself shutting down mentally and emotionally after her diagnosis. To help combat those feelings, Kay sought out the wellness services available at the Gerber Hospital Cancer Care Center, and her outlook changed. She credits the amazing team at the Gerber Hospital Cancer Care Center for not only the great level of service, but also helping her maintain a positive outlook.
Kay says that local care was crucial in her journey. Having Gerber Hospital so close to home really made a tremendous impact, as she couldn’t have imagined having to travel to Grand Rapids or further for her necessary treatments each week. Being able to stay close to home and receive support beyond her medical needs with salon and wig services, massages, music therapy, art therapy and more made a big difference in her treatment.
