Program Highlights

Youth Behavioral Telehealth Clinics

Your support brings important mental health services to students at three high schools in our community through the virtual clinics located in the buildings. Philanthropy supports financial assistance for students who do not have access to their parent’s insurance or are under insured.

Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center

Philanthropy helped fund many cancer care services this year including transportation costs, lodging, prescription assistance, meals and other financial assistance when needed. Your support helped a patient who needed a dental exam prior to starting her treatment but was unable to afford the costs of her exam and tooth extraction. Because of philanthropy, she was able to receive her dental care quickly and began her cancer treatment in a timely manner.

Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals Auxiliary Gift

In 2024, the Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals Auxiliary donated over $70,000 to support nine initiatives, including patient assistance and new equipment. A significant portion funded the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program, a collaboration with local agencies to provide trained nurses and proper equipment for sexual assault victims. This ensures evidence is safely collected and stored until the patient decides on law enforcement involvement.

A message from a teen who received help through a school-based adolescent behavioral health telemedicine clinic:

Before counseling, I was so lost and felt hopeless. My depression and anxiety were sky rocketing. Despite having been a student who received mostly As and Bs, I was failing classes. I slept more than normal both day and night, cried and felt numb at night. As hard as I tried to find enjoyment, it wasn’t there anymore. My close friends and family could tell I wasn’t myself. I didn’t tell anyone what was going on or what was wrong. I tried to push through and continued to be the me that everyone knew and loved because I didn’t want anyone to worry. I knew one “are you okay?” was going to send me into a spiral. I never knew when it was going to get better. Then, I decided it was time I needed to get help; I realized I could not endure this pain and hopelessness on my own and wanted to learn how to help myself. Visiting the clinic at my school was the best thing I could have done. It wasn’t an instant fix but having someone see it from the outside, instead of being stuck in my own thoughts, someone who would genuinely listen and try to help, gave me hope. I could not be more grateful for the clinic and for those who made it possible for people like me to get help when they need it. You never know what someone is going through, and having a place to turn to where you know you’ll get support is an amazing thing.
