David M. Leonard, JD, is chief legal officer of Corewell Health™ — formed by the joining together of Beaumont Health and Spectrum Health in 2022.

As chief legal officer, David leads the legal and government affairs functions for the system and its regions and advises the system’s governing boards and executive leadership regarding legal, legislative, regulatory and governance matters. He is passionate about doing what’s right, forming strong partnerships and improving the health of the communities Corewell Health serves, with a particular focus on eliminating health disparities and collaborating within and beyond the system to advocate for more equitable systems and practices.

Before serving as Chief Legal Officer for Corewell Health, David served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, and Chief Legal Officer for Spectrum Health. In this role, David collaborated on numerous hospital integrations, physician affiliations and health plan transactions; structured and maintained various strategic relationships, including joint ventures; and provided executive leadership to Spectrum Health’s health equity efforts and community health outreach. In addition, he provided oversight to the system’s legal, risk management and government affairs functions, and served as an advisor to executive and board leadership.

Prior to joining Spectrum Health in 2002, David was a partner with the nationally recognized health law firm Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman, headquartered in Indianapolis. He also served as Majority Attorney for the Indiana House of Representatives in 1996.

David earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington and Juris Doctor at Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, where he also served as an editor for the Indiana Law Review.

David is a member of the American Health Law Association and State Bar of Michigan. He has served in numerous community organizations and on governmental boards and commissions. He currently serves on the boards of the Grand Rapids Public Museum Foundation (chair, audit committee) and the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce (chair, governance committee, 2024, and member, executive committee, 2024).
