Ensuring a healthy pregnancy

Gestational diabetes happens when your body is unable to keep its blood sugar in check during pregnancy. When your blood sugar levels rise, symptoms of diabetes occur.

If you’re facing a gestational diabetes diagnosis, the Corewell Health team will guide the path to a healthy and safe delivery. We will create a personalized plan based on your needs and provide continual monitoring and care throughout your pregnancy.

Diagnosing gestational diabetes

Any pregnant woman can develop gestational diabetes, and the signs aren’t always noticeable. To determine if your blood sugar levels have increased, a routine glucose screening test is given to all women, usually between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy.

Risk factors include

  • Advanced maternal age (over 35)
  • Being overweight
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Previous gestational diabetes

Treatments include

  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Insulin therapy (if necessary)
  • Nutrition and meal planning
  • Regular physical activity
