Student Heart Check

Every year, students experience sudden cardiac arrest due to an abnormal heart structure or unusual rhythms, which can sometimes present without warning or symptoms. To see if your child is at risk, Corewell Health in Southeast Michigan provides focused echocardiogram, EKG, and blood pressure checks, along with a vascular health evaluation—all for free.

Student Heart Check is a designed for students ages 13-18 who want to have a heart check but don't have a history of heart disease or symptoms that would prompt their doctor to make a referral to cardiology. We work directly with schools to arrange clinic dates throughout the year, and the schools work with parents to register their children for those clinics. In the event that clinic schedules aren't filled, we open up appointments to the public and send an email to our notification list.

Notice: If you are seeking a screening because your child is complaining of a concerning symptom such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations, follow up immediately with your child’s doctor. In those cases, doctors should write a referral to cardiology.

Since 2007, the Student Heart Check program has trained nearly 12,000 students and educators on hands-only CPR and screened over 21,000 students for underlying heart concerns, thanks to donations from our sponsors and the people in our community.
