Many kids struggle with excess body weight. While there may be an underlying genetic or medical condition, the path to better health usually begins with making healthy lifestyle changes.
The multidisciplinary team at Corewell Health Children's Pediatric Weight Management Clinic provides individual evaluations and treatment plans for patients who are significantly above a healthy weight for their age and height.
We partner closely with families to set achievable goals focused on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and more — because when the entire family makes changes together, those changes are more likely to last.
Here’s what you can expect:
The goal of this appointment is to identify the root causes of your child’s weight gain and develop a treatment plan. You and your child will meet with either a doctor or nurse practitioner with experience in pediatric obesity, as well as a registered dietitian.
New patient visits typically last 60 to 90 minutes. We may also check for any underlying metabolic or hormonal conditions that can contribute to excess weight gain.
Our team will build a custom treatment plan that focuses on behavior changes and addresses the specific factors most responsible for your child’s weight gain — for example, nutrition and diet, physical activity, sleep, and media usage.
By the time you leave your first appointment, you and your child will have a list of goals you can begin working on together at home right away.
One or more follow-up appointments to review goals and progress may be recommended for some families. These typically last 30 to 40 minutes.
If your child has any underlying medical conditions that need treatment, such as cholesterol or lipid abnormalities, we will coordinate with your child’s pediatrician and any other medical specialists necessary to ensure your child gets the care they need.
