Critical Care for Children

Our pediatric critical care unit, or PCCU, provides around-the-clock care for infants, children and teens with traumatic injuries or life-threatening illnesses, and recovery care services for children after surgery.

We provide more than just intensive care and monitoring. Our services in the PCCU include nutritional support, pain management, complex patient evaluation and anything else your child may need while staying with us. Our team includes doctors, nurses, physical and respiratory therapists, child life specialists, and more, all specially trained to work with children.

Our experienced pediatric doctors and specialists are ready to serve you and your family.

The ICU setting can be a scary place for kids, but our team is specifically trained and to care for critically ill children and their families 24-7.  We have 30 beds split between the seventh and eighth floors of Helen DeVos Children's Hospital where each child gets their own individual room. We welcome 1-2 family members to stay with their child and our family ambassador, social workers and chaplains are available to help support families in any way possible.

How children get to the unit

Ambulance

Beginning February 2025, kids needing Critical Care across the state of Michigan can be transported by our dedicated Critical Care Transport ambulance. The vehicle is a mobile intensive care unit that has special supplies and equipment to care for children. This team’s goal is to provide the highest standard of care to critically ill children requiring advanced pediatric care, beyond the walls of Helen Devos Children’s Hospital.

Spectrum health Critical Care Transport Ambulance

The person driving the ambulance is a specially trained emergency medical technician who helps the transport team. The transport team stays in contact with the staff back at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and keeps them updated on your child’s condition.

To arrange for referral or transport to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, call 616.391.3100, option 1.

Aeromed

Occasionally we use a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft if needed due to distance or critical nature of the child. The transport team consists of a specially trained transport nurse and respiratory therapist. One of our critical care physicians is always available to provide direction by phone.

Time matters when your child needs critical care and our goal is to safely and quickly transport your child to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital so they can receive the important care they need.

Features of critical care

Intensive care

Intensive care involves extra machines and additional doctors and other medical personnel, all providing a higher level of care, with constant monitoring to catch any changes in condition as soon as they happen.

Intravenous access

Often, a small straw-like tube will be placed into a vein in the arm and kept there for your child's stay so that we do not have to repeatedly be inserting needles for blood samples or administration of fluids, medications and nutrition.

Nutritional support

Proper nutrition is an important part of helping your child get well, but your child's condition may make it difficult for him or her to eat normally or be interested in food. We also provide nutrition by way of IV or tube feedings, depending on what is best for your child and his or her condition.

Pain management

Pain management, paired along with sedation and distraction techniques as appropriate, is designed to maximize your child's comfort and minimize anxiety during procedures that might be painful.

Pulmonary function testing

These lung tests measure how well your child is able to breathe. They also help us determine the appropriate levels of treatment for any breathing assistance needs.

Sedation

Part of ensuring your child's hospital experience is compassionate and kid-friendly is by providing expert levels of sedation during medical procedures and tests, as necessary. Our goal is to minimize any pain or anxiety for your child during his or her time with us.
