What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain linked to mood and emotional health. It’s an option for people living with:

  • Depression that hasn’t improved with other treatments
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Why consider TMS?

If medications or therapy haven’t worked or haven’t worked well enough, TMS may offer a new approach. Patients often choose TMS because:

  • Side effects are typically mild and short-lived
  • Treatment is done while you’re awake, with no sedation or anesthesia required
  • You can resume normal activities immediately after each session

TMS isn’t right for everyone. It may not be recommended for individuals with certain implanted devices, metal near the head, or seizure conditions. Your care team will help determine if it’s appropriate for you.

What treatment looks like

TMS fits into your routine:

  • Short, daily sessions (about 20 minutes each)
  • A course of approximately four to six weeks
  • A personalized first session to map the treatment area

Many patients begin to see improvement over time, especially when other treatments haven’t provided relief.
