When a recent Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) showed an underutilization of available services among veterans in Ottawa County, Corewell Health chose to focus efforts on closing that gap. A research, learning and evaluation plan was created to engage Ottawa County residents to understand the disconnect between veteran services and mental health.
Veterans carry the largest burden of suicide in Ottawa County, according to a 2023 report from the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, and Corewell Health is committed to exploring the issues at hand.
Corewell Health is dedicated to bridging the gap between available services and veterans in Ottawa County. By listening and engaging with the community, we aim to ensure every veteran receives the care and support they deserve, fostering hope and healing for those who have given so much.
Supporting our veterans means honoring their strength and recognizing the challenges they may face after service, including those we can’t always see. This work is important, and we look forward to the meaningful collaborations both within the hospital, and throughout the community, to develop, strengthen, and expand services that are available to them.

This initiative engages several areas of the business including Healthier Communities and advisory committees like the Veterans Business Resource Group. Community research began on January 1, 2025 and will continue into 2027. The committee will develop internal protocol to reduce the percentage of eligible veterans not receiving benefits in the hope that when veterans are connected to benefits, they are less likely to have a mental health crisis.
Corewell Health remains dedicated to listening, learning, and taking meaningful action. By working closely with veterans, team members, and community members, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between available services and those who need them most. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected support system — one that ensures every veteran in Ottawa County has access to the care and resources they deserve.
