New research may hold key to better treatments for aggressive brain cancer

Southfield, Mich., April 17, 2023 – For decades, researchers have marveled at the ability of glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive brain cancer, to turn off a patient’s cancer-fighting immune cells, thereby allowing tumors to grow freely. This remains a primary reason why there are very few effective therapies available for this mostly fatal disease.

In a new study using more than 100 patient-derived glioblastoma tumors, Prakash Chinnaiyan, M.D., a physician scientist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Corewell Health in Southeast, Mich., along with colleague and lead author Pravin Kesarwani, Ph.D., have discovered that a naturally produced chemical in the body is helping glioblastoma cells go unrecognized by a patient’s own immune cells whose job it is to stop them.

Major Michigan health systems transition to optional masking

After three years of caring for patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many of Michigan’s major health systems are making masking optional in most areas over the next week.

Factors influencing the Michigan health systems to work together to make this decision include:

  • The number of COVID-19 inpatients has drastically declined across the state.
  • There are multiple effective ways to combat the virus, including vaccines and medical treatment.
  • The desire to restore the powerful human connection when patients, caregivers and loved ones can see each other’s faces.

Results of the 18-month study, published in Lancet Regional Health - Americas and led by Amit Bahl, M.D., M.P.H., emergency medicine with Corewell Health East, formerly Beaumont Health, showed that while omicron cases had the highest hospital admission rates among children ages 0 to 17, serious, even deadly, cases of illness were less likely during omicron than during the delta and alpha variants.
