Corewell Health chief operating officer named interim leader of East region

GRAND RAPIDS and SOUTHFIELD - Corewell Health has appointed chief operating officer Darryl Elmouchi, MD, to also serve as the interim president of Corewell Health’s East region. 

In this interim role, Dr. Elmouchi succeeds Ben Schwartz, MD, who is leaving the organization effective today. Dr. Schwartz joined the system one year ago.

Across Michigan, 12 Corewell Health hospitals have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024 Best Hospitals, including three hospitals that earned national recognition for their services. Corewell Health has the most nationally recognized hospitals in the state.

After discovery of rare disease, doctors invent successful treatment in just 15 months

Grand Rapids, Mich., May 15, 2023 – For a handful of children worldwide who have an ultra-rare disease called Bachmann-Bupp syndrome, a treatment regimen discovered in just 15 months by the team who identified the disease is dramatically changing their young lives. Now, two Corewell Health physicians are part of a group who has been nationally recognized by the New York Intellectual Property Law Association with its annual Inventor of the Year award, presented on May 10, 2023, in New York City.

Corewell Health names Alejandro Quiroga, M.D., as president of Corewell Health in West Michigan

Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich. – April 26, 2023 – Corewell HealthTM has appointed Alejandro Quiroga, M.D., MBA, as president, Corewell Health West, effective May 1, 2023. Quiroga succeeds Darryl Elmouchi, M.D., MBA, who was appointed as chief operating officer of Corewell Health.

As president, Quiroga will lead strategy, operations, clinical oversight and financial performance for 11 hospitals, 120 outpatient locations, telehealth, a large continuing and home care enterprise, and a medical group with 2,000+ provider members in West Michigan. He also will serve as a member of the system leadership team at Corewell Health.

Corewell Health names Darryl Elmouchi, MD, chief operating officer as system integration gathers momentum

GRAND RAPIDS and SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 25, 2023 – Corewell Health™ has appointed Darryl Elmouchi, MD, MBA, as its chief operating officer, bringing the clinical operations of Michigan’s top health care system into even greater alignment.

Elmouchi had served as president of Corewell Health West, which oversees the system’s West Michigan-based health care operations, since 2020, and has been with the organization as a practicing cardiac electrophysiologist since 2006.

New research may hold key to better treatments for aggressive brain cancer

Southfield, Mich., April 17, 2023 – For decades, researchers have marveled at the ability of glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive brain cancer, to turn off a patient’s cancer-fighting immune cells, thereby allowing tumors to grow freely. This remains a primary reason why there are very few effective therapies available for this mostly fatal disease.

In a new study using more than 100 patient-derived glioblastoma tumors, Prakash Chinnaiyan, M.D., a physician scientist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Corewell Health in Southeast, Mich., along with colleague and lead author Pravin Kesarwani, Ph.D., have discovered that a naturally produced chemical in the body is helping glioblastoma cells go unrecognized by a patient’s own immune cells whose job it is to stop them.

Major Michigan health systems transition to optional masking

After three years of caring for patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many of Michigan’s major health systems are making masking optional in most areas over the next week.

Factors influencing the Michigan health systems to work together to make this decision include:

  • The number of COVID-19 inpatients has drastically declined across the state.
  • There are multiple effective ways to combat the virus, including vaccines and medical treatment.
  • The desire to restore the powerful human connection when patients, caregivers and loved ones can see each other’s faces.

Corewell Health participates in national effort to expedite delivery of proven research results to doctors, patients

Southfield and Grand Rapids, Mich., March 2, 2023 – Corewell Health is one of 42 health systems nationwide that has been selected to investigate strategies that will cut the time it takes for published and proven research results to be made available in the clinical setting.

The work is part of a pioneering initiative developed by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, or PCORI, an independent, non-profit organization that funds research that may help patients, caregivers and clinicians make better-informed health decisions for improved patient outcomes.

Corewell Health Cardiologist Wins Press Ganey Physician of the Year

ST. JOSEPH, Mich., Feb. 7, 2023 – A Corewell Health physician, Willie E. Lawrence, Jr., MD, FAHA, FACC, has been honored as Press Ganey’s HX23 Physician of the Year. Dr. Lawrence, an interventional cardiologist, practices in Southwest Michigan, including at the Center for Better Health and Wellness in Benton Harbor, where he serves as Medical Director for the City. He also serves as Medical Director of Health Equity at Corewell Health.
