Simple MRI scan could predict radiation side effects for prostate cancer

Southfield, Mich., Oct. 18, 2023 – A new Corewell Health study suggests that men who have longer prostatic urethras, the part of the urethra that travels through the prostate, may be at a higher risk of experiencing moderate, often chronic urinary side effects after receiving radiation for prostate cancer.

To date, researchers have struggled to determine any risk factors that could shed light on who might experience these types of side effects ahead of time. But now, a simple MRI scan and a new metric to determine urethra length could change that.

Corewell Health neuroscientist leads research to tackle disparate growth of Alzheimer’s among Black Americans

Alzheimer’s disease is the fourth leading cause of death among older Black Americans, a trend that is expected to increase exponentially during the next five to 10 years.

To address the growing disparity and identify multi-level risk factors impacting the higher prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease among middle-aged and older Black adults, Corewell Health neuroscientist and metabolomicist Stewart Graham, Ph.D., an associate professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, in collaboration with Travonia Brown-Hughes, Ph.D., associate professor, Hampton University, and Johns Hopkins Resource Center Minority Aging Research scientist and Roland J. Thorpe, Ph.D., social epidemiologist with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and director of the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center for Minority Aging, are spearheading a first-of-its-kind, five-year, $4.8 million research project funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Corewell Health First in State to Implant Device to Improve Mobility after Stroke

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Oct. 2, 2023 – Corewell Health™ has become the first and only health system in Michigan to implant a device intended to improve upper body mobility in patients who have experienced a debilitating stroke.

In clinical trials, the Vivistim Paired VNS System, coupled with intensive rehabilitation therapy, has resulted in improved hand and arm function for stroke survivors.

The FDA-approved device, which was surgically implanted by surgeons at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, delivers vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) during rehabilitation therapy. The pairing of rehabilitation exercise with VNS creates or strengthens nerve connections in healthy areas of the brain, which increases the effectiveness of the therapy and has been shown to improve upper limb function.

Corewell Health’s Beaumont Children’s Receives $2 Million in Children’s Miracle Network Grants

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) announced financial support for programs at Corewell Health’s Beaumont Children’s. More than $2 million dollars in grants have been issued to enhance pediatric programs at Corewell Health’s Beaumont Children’s locations for fall, 2023. More than 60 programs received funding.

In-home prenatal support improves birth outcomes, reduces disparities, study shows

Grand Rapids, Mich., Sept. 25, 2023 – New Michigan State University and Corewell Health research shows that in-home, enhanced prenatal services provided by community health workers, nurses and social workers can dramatically reduce the risk of premature births, the main cause of infant deaths among Black and Hispanic populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020 ranked Michigan seventh highest in the U.S. for infant mortality.
