Corewell Health Hospitals in Southwest Michigan Earn National Recognition for Patient Safety

May 01, 2024

St. Joseph, Mich., May 1, 2024 – Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals - St. Joseph Hospital earned high marks from the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. This national distinction recognizes the achievements of the hospitals in protecting patients from preventable harm and error.

Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals: St. Joseph earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade and Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals; Niles Hospital earned a “B” Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2024.

"We are exceptionally proud of the quality, safety and experience we provide our community at our St. Joseph and Niles hospitals,” said Robert Nolan, D.O., vice president of quality, safety and experience at Corewell Health™ in Southwest Michigan. “Receiving an ‘A’ for St. Joeseph and a ‘B’ for Niles is a great accomplishment. We tirelessly strive for improvement and will continue the excellent work of delivering continued excellence."

The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country twice annually. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, the performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

“Across the system we continue to make forward progress on optimizing safety outcomes for the patients and families,” said James Moses, M.D., chief of quality, safety and patient experience for Corewell Health. “I’m proud of the achievements we are seeing broadly across the organization.”
