New imaging software improves lung diagnosis for 30% of patients who can't tolerate contrast dye; has added diagnostic benefits for all patients

Southfield, Mich., May 17, 2024 – For up to 30% of patients who are allergic to medical contrast dye or have a dye restriction because of other health conditions, they might find that it takes longer to get a diagnosis when it comes to life-threatening lung issues such as pulmonary embolism. That’s because imaging methods that detect lung problems but don’t use contrast dye aren’t as accurate and can be more time-consuming to administer.

High School Students Help Save Teacher Who Experienced Sudden Cardiac Arrest

During a student-teacher basketball game March 22, beloved Oak Park Schools coach and physical education teacher, Al Kattola, collapsed due to sudden cardiac arrest.

Within seconds, Isreal DuBose, a 17-year-old Oak Park student, assessed the situation and initiated the chain of survival with the help of Oak Park staff. The chain of survival begins with calling 911, providing early CPR followed by rapid defibrillation.

“Until something happens, you don’t know how you’ll react,” said DuBose, who also works as a patient transporter at Corewell Health in Royal Oak and plans to study nursing, followed by general surgery. “I’m so proud and grateful I was able to be there, act quickly and start delivering compressions right away.”

Corewell Health names new president for Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan

Natalie Baggio, RN, will become the new president of Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan, effective July 1. She will report to the system’s Chief Operating Officer, Darryl Elmouchi, M.D., and also will actively engage with the health system’s leadership team.

Baggio currently serves as senior vice president, chief nursing executive and chief operating officer for Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan.

First class of Corewell Health Nurse Scholars to graduate from Grand Valley State University

Grand Rapids, Mich., April 25, 2024 – The inaugural class of Corewell Health’s Grand Valley State University Nurse Scholars Program will graduate Saturday, April 27, as part of a partnership between Corewell Health™ and Grand Valley State University.

Graduates of the program receive up to $20,000 in scholarship funds and must agree to two years of continual full-time employment with Corewell Health hospitals in West Michigan.

Corewell Health names new president for Corewell Health - Southeast Michigan

Corewell Health will welcome Lamont Yoder, RN, as the new president of Corewell Health - Southeast Michigan, effective May 6. He will be reporting to the system’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Darryl Elmouchi, and will also serve as a member of Corewell Health President & CEO Tina Freese Decker’s senior leadership team.

Yoder joins Corewell Health from Banner Health in Arizona, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country, where he currently serves as division president of 13 of the system’s 30 hospitals.

Corewell Health Among First in Nation to Use Novel Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation

Grand Rapids and Royal Oak, Mich., Feb. 21, 2024 – Corewell Health™ is the first health system in the Midwest to successfully treat patients with an innovative technology that uses pulsed electric fields to address atrial fibrillation.

The procedures took place on Thursday, Feb.15, at Corewell Health Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids and at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak.

Two new directors began three-year terms on Jan. 1, 2024: Joseph J. Fifer, former president and CEO of the Healthcare Financial Management Association; and Robert Williams, M.D., retired family physician and health services researcher.
